Rising Flames

I watched as the flames rose,
devouring my city whole.
Nothing is left, not one thing;
I am alone.

No one but I
escaped the rising flames
that devoured my city whole;
No one is left but I.

Brilliant flames of red and yellow
and dark smoke and ash
covered my city;
I am all that is left.

You will find no one else here.
I am alone.
Not a single soul stirs;
Not one heart beats but mine.

The rising flames that took
all that I once had,
have vanished into nothingness.
Ash is all that remains.

You can search for survivors
but you will find none,
for I am the only one here
and I am alone.

Wait, dear listener
I must warn you.
If you are not careful,
the rising flames will come for you.

They will be merciless.
You will hear the cry of infants
and the screams of men and women
as the flames roll on.

You will be alone
just as I,
No one will be left for you.
This is my warning.
For when the flames rise
there is no escape.
All will perish,
all but you.

So go, leave, run, hide;
the flames will come
and you cannot escape them.
You too will be left to be alone.

I watched the flames rose;
now I stand alone.
You will do the same
and will be left behind.
